As part of the weekly awareness campaign of the "Cyber Pulse" initiative launched by the UAE Cybersecurity Council (CSC), the Council emphasized the importance of regular inspection and cleaning of electronic devices, including mobile phones and personal tablets and laptop. It noted that, although these practices may seem simple, they could reduce cyber incidents by up to 30% and provide users with an additional layer of protection against malware and the growing spectrum of cyber threats.

CSC explained that the accumulation of unnecessary files and data makes it easier for malicious software to infiltrate devices, thereby increasing cyber risks and exposing users to potential data loss or privacy breaches. It urged individuals to adhere to proper cyber practices, including regularly updating devices and applications, as well as routinely removing harmful or unused files.

The Council highlighted several signs that indicate a device may need cleaning, including slow performance, unusual messages or recurring errors, full storage capacity, and the presence of unknown or unused applications. It stressed that adopting a simple digital cleaning routine can significantly enhance device security. This routine includes using trusted security software, deleting unnecessary files and applications, and continuously updating operating systems and software to address vulnerabilities and improve performance.

The Council further warned that neglecting these steps might open the door for cybercriminals to exploit security gaps, emphasizing that prevention begins with simple daily practices carried out by users themselves. It noted that regular digital cleaning not only protects devices but also improves overall performance and extends device lifespan, positively influencing the digital productivity of both individuals and organizations. Conversely, it cautioned that the accumulation of unused data creates an ideal environment for malware activity, which, over time, can evolve into serious security vulnerabilities allowing attackers to access sensitive information or gain indirect control over devices. Therefore, organizing files and removing unnecessary data is not merely a technical measure, but a preventive step that strengthens the resilience of digital systems.

CSC also described digital cleaning as a smart habit that reflects users’ awareness of cybersecurity importance and contributes to mitigating various cyber threats, including phishing attacks and deceptive messages aimed at tricking individuals into disclosing sensitive information such as passwords or credit card details, as well as ransomware, which encrypts files and demands payment. It noted that malware could take many forms, ranging from viruses that damage systems to spyware that steals information.

The weekly campaign further indicated that adopting digital cleaning practices could significantly reduce these risks, while emphasizing the need for individuals to commit to sound cyber habits, maintain strong cybersecurity awareness, stay informed about emerging threats, and keep security software up to date.
